Results from additional Mare Grading

On the 11th December, there was an additional mare grading near Newark-on-Trent and six mares were graded into one of the SPSS studbooks, depending on their score and completeness of pedigree.  The highest scoring mare was SPSS registered Ruby Rouge (pictured on right).  By the top eventing sire, Mill Law, Ruby Rouge is the first foal from SPSS Elite graded mare Sapphire Blue who was herself Mare Grading Champion in 2005 when she retired to stud after a successful career as an Event and Working Hunter Pony - including winning Team Bronze at the 1996 European Pony Eventing Championships.  Ruby Rouge had a foal by the Selle Francais jumping pony, Jimmerdor de Florys and was bred by her owner, Anne Bosanquet.  More information and full results from the grading are available here

Additional Mare Grading

The opportunity has arisen to have an additional mare grading in Ollerton, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, (provisionally) on Sunday 11th December.  There are a few spaces left and anyone interested in presenting a mare should contact Sarah Steggall at Head Office (numbers at top of page) as soon as possible.

Success for SPSS Graded Mares

Two SPSS Graded mares are off to Championships in the spring.  Event pony, Bernwode Nairobi (aka Ziggy), and her young owner/rider Alice Jones have had an eventful season with Alice having time off on crutches after a fall in June but they put that behind them at the Berkshire College of Agriculture British Eventing (BE) Regional Final on 27th September.  Alice and Ziggy were in the BE90 final and excelled themselves, finishing on their excellent dressage score of 25.5 in 3rd place.  This has qualified them for the Grassroots Championships that are held at Badminton the day before the famous Badminton International Three Day Event in May.  Although shorter, the Grassroots Championships course runs alongside the 4* course and the fences are normally mini versions of the classic Badminton fences.  Eight year old Bernwode Nairobi (SPSS) was bred by Sarah Steggall of Bernwode Stud and is by Nibelungenheld IV out of Bernwode Mandy (by Apslau).  Alice and Ziggy will be training with the BE Pony Squad trainers over the winter

Dressage pony, Daisy Dressman, and her young rider, Ruth Hole (pictured on the right), placed second in the Medium Restricted Championships at the recent Pet Plan Area Festival at Vale View Equestrian Centre.  As a result, Ruth and Daisy have qualified for the prestigious Pet Plan Finals which are held alongside the Winter Dressage Championships at Hartpury College in April 2012. Twelve year old year old Daisy (Westfalen) was bred in Germany and is by Dressman Junior out of Lady (by Leopold).  Daisy, owned by Rachel Murray and Sarah Steggall, and Ruth are reserves for the British Dressage National Training Squad and will be attending at least one National Training session over the winter.

We wish both mares and their young riders the very best of luck at their Championships in the Spring.  News of SPSS graded mares and stallions can be submitted for this page at any time -

SPSS Stallions Selected for Dressage Squads

Two SPSS stallions, Rembrandt DDH and Bernwode Brokat, have been selected for the winter 2011/12 Dressage Pony Squad Training.  This training is for the combinations that the selectors view to be the most promising for selection for 2012 international competintions.  Rembrandt (pictured left) and rider Maisie Scruton are an established combination as they were the top scoring British combination in the team test at the 2011 Pony European Championships.  In contrast, Ruth Hole had only ridden Bernwode Brokat a few times before being invited to the Viewing Day but they performed well and Brokat is now based with Ruth for the winter.  In addition, another SPSS graded stallion, Eindershof Jamai, and Annie Lloyd-Aylett have been selected for the National Training Squad.

SPSS Graded Ponies Selected for BD Pony Viewing Day

Two SPSS Graded Stallions and one SPSS Graded Mare have been selected to attend the BD Pony National and Squad Training Viewing Day on Saturday 8 October.  The stallions are Eindershof Jamai and Bernwode Brokat (pictured on left).  Eight year old Jamai will be ridden by Annie Lloyd-Aylett who has been competing him regularly this year. This combination qualified for the BD Regional Championships at Novice Open level and they have also won at Medium level.  Fourteen year old Brokat will be ridden by 12 year old Ruth Hole.  Until Brokat moved to Cambridgeshire a week ago, Ruth had only ridden him a few times on her visits to Bernwode Stud (in Somerset!).  Ruth is also riding SPSS Head Studbook mare, Daisy Dressman, and they placed 5th in the Pony Team Test at the Hartpury Festival in July.

All 3 ponies are on the list for Pony Squad trainer Peter Storr and will also be assessed by the selectors, Jenny Ward and Sarah Pidgley to decide whether they fulfil the criteria to attend either BYRDS National or Squad Training.  Ruth and Brokat are pictured above.

Update on SPSS Stallion SOS Kantjes Unicolor

SPSS Stallion, SOS Kantje's Unicolor, has made a winning return to dressage.  Having been busy hunting with his owner's son, 12 year old Redvers Stokes, Unicolor (known as "Nippy") had not competed at dressage for almost 18 months before going to a show in early September.  At this show, Nippy, ridden by Emily Grange won two classes, scoring over 68% in both and qualifying for a British Dressage Area Festival.  Nippy and Emily then went on to win both the warm up class and the Area Festival Restricted Novice Championships at Tall Trees, Cornwall on the 2nd October and so are off to the Area Festival Finals in April 2012.  Unicolor will again spend the winter hunting with Redvers.

Emily is pictured with Nippy after the Area Festival prize giving and we wish them the best of luck at the prestigious Finals (which are held at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire from 18 to 22 Apr 2012)

At the same Area Festival, Nippy's 5 year old son, SOS United Colours also qualified for the Pet Plan Finals by coming 3rd in the Prelim Area Festival Championships ridden by his owner, Liz Fraser-Hitch. United Colours, known as "Spirit"  and Liz have also been competing at British Dressage Novice level this year, gaining some good scores and qualifying for 2 Area Festivals at this level too.  Spirit was bred by Georgie Stoke of SOS Horses and is out of the part-bred Connemara mare, Quay.  Quay is by the Thoroughbred Kuwait Beach out of the part-bred Connemara Contessa (by Haddon Challenger (IDx) out of the Connemara Whitwell Pheasant).  Since having Skippy, Quay has been competing at British Eventing with a series of pony riders and in 2011 completed the Pony 2 Star event at Brand Hall ridden by Harry Humphrey.  Quay is now owned and ridden by Hettie Horler.

SPSS Merit Awards Presented at 2011 Grading

We were privileged to have two Pony European Gold Medal winning ponies displaying in the break between the stallion and mare gradings this year.  The first to display, to the music "Nobody Does It Better", was the 2011 Team and Individual Gold medal wining jumping pony, Falaza.  Falaza and rider Beth Vernon showed off their jumping skills while the audience heard about Falaza's breeding and other successes.

Next in was the 2010 Dutch dressage team Gold medal winner, the Elite SPSS sire, Rembrandt DDH.  Rembrandt was ridden by his current owner, Maisie Scruton, and together they were the highest scoring British Combination in the team test at the 2011 Pony European Dressage Championships.  Maisie and Rembrandt did a lovely display to music that showed how they had scored over 73% at the Kur Championships this year.

Both ponies were presented with SPSS Merit Awards in recognition of their British Team achievements this year along with their Elite Stallion and Elite Mare status.  Rembrandt is pictured receiving his rosette from Hans-Heinrich Bruening.

2011 Grading Results

The 2011 stallion and mare gradings took place at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre in their lovely new indoor complex on Saturday 1st October.  The grading judges were Herr Hans-Heinrich Bruening, Mrs Celia Clarke and Mr Geoff Glazzard (stallions only) were kept busy with a full day as 15 mares and 15 stallions were presented for inspection.  We were delighted that all 15 mares passed the assessment with German Judge, Hans-Heinrich Bruening, commenting positively on their quality overall.  In addition, 7 stallions passed the assessment and they will be licensed by the SPSS for an initial period to allow their performance and progeny to be assessed.  The full results are given here with links to each pony's breeding.

The 2011 Champion Stallion was Jeanette Matthews-Griffiths's home-bred, WBS-UK registered 2 year old, Wadacre Super Trooper.  Super Trooper is by the Hanoverian, Sarkozy out of British Warmblood, Wadacre Watch Me.   Sarkozy was winner of his stallion performance test and vice-Bundeschampion and is by the famous sire, Sandro Hit out of a Weltmeyer mare.  Super Trooper's dam is by the Hanoverian, Waikiki of Wadacre, out of a British Riding Pony mare. Jeanette was thrilled that Wadacre Super Trooper won the Semen Freezing Package, kindly offered by www.Equine-Reproduction.com LLC.

Reserve Champion stallion was Penny Walster's Bathleyhills Monet, a German Riding Pony by Casino Royale K out of Mona (by Matcho).  Monet was last year's SPSS In-Hand Show Champion as a yearling.

The Champion Mare was the 10 year old, SHB(GB) registered, 2011 double Pony European Jumping Gold medal winner, Allyson Blagg's Falaza.  Falaza was bred by Jane Fowles and is pictured on the right receiving her prizes of a SPSS Thermatex rug and a £100 Voucher for Equine-Reproduction.com LLC services from one of the judges, Hans-Heinrich Bruening.

The Reserve Champion Mare, Glanhayl Red Sonia is also British-bred (by Samantha Morsley) and is by the Welsh Secton C pony, Fourwinds Flashjack out of a TB mare.  Sonia is in foal to the 2010 Team Gold Medal winning dressage pony and SPSS Elite sire, Rembrandt DDH.

2011 Potential Jumping & Eventing Pony Championships - Results

The 2011 Potential Showjumping and Eventing Championships were held as part of the 2011 IPS Auction and took place on Sunday 18th September at South View Competition & Training Centre, Cheshire.  Although less ponies were entered than hoped for, both the jumping and eventing judges agreed that the top ponies were top quality and had exciting futures ahead.  Excitingly, most ponies, including both Champions and Reserves were British-bred.

Overall Eventing Champion was the 5 year old section winner, British-bred Carnsdale Sunnyside, ridden by 12 year old Ant Woodbine.  "Sunny" and Ant had the highest dressage score then did a stylish clear round and judge, Linda De Matteo commented afterwards that Sunny was "an outstanding young pony with huge potential and an exciting international event pony prospect". Sunny was bred by Mr A E Bewley and is an Irish Sport Horse by MJ Fine Art (Irish Sports Horse) out of a mare by Looking Glass.

The Eventing Reserve Champion was another British-bred, 6 year old Morrigan Mahraid ridden by Robyn Harris who was second in the 6 year old section but then impressed Linda when asked to gallop in the Championships so moved up the line.  Morrigan Mahraid was bred and owned by Morrigan Stud and is a part-bred Connemara by Kilmullen Fionn (Connemara) out of Morrigan Lucy Too (by Telynav Pavarotti (RWPB Riding Pony))

Overall Jumping Champion was another 5 year old, the WPCS Sec B and SPSS graded stallion, Rotherwood Signature ridden by 8 year old Maisie Sloane.   The Jumping judge, Gillian Milner commented on Rotherwood Signature's potential that he "has everything to excel in any sphere".  Rotherwood Signature is owned by Trudy Golding of End House Stud and was bred by Liz Manshield-Parnell being by Douthwaite Signwriter (WPCS Sec B) out of a mare by Desabre Streetfighter (WPCS Sec B). Morrigan Mahraid (ridden by Robyn Harris) showed her versatility by again standing as Reserve Champion.

Update on SPSS Stallion Eindershof Jamai

SPSS Stallion, Eindershof Jamai did a well received display at the recent IPS Auction Event at South View Competition & Training Centre, Cheshire.  Jamai was entered in the 2010 IPS Auction and although he was not presented on the day, he later sold to Joanna Lloyd-Aylett of Maelor EC.  Eindershof Jamai is a Dutch-bred part-bred Welsh pony who graded in the Netherlands before being imported into the UK to stand at stud in Lancashire.

Since moving to Maelor EC, Jamai has been brought on by his owner's daughter, Annie who rode him for the display and has been successfully competing him at dressage this year, qualifying for the British Dressage Regional Finals at Novice Open level.   During the display, Annie showed that Jamai is now schooling at Medium level by including lateral work at trot and canter.  Jamai is pictured in the horsebox being tacked up for the display.

Young Dressage Pony Championship 2011 - Results

The SPSS sponsored Young Dressage Pony Championships took place on Sunday 11th September at  Vale View Equestrian, Melton Mowbray.  There were 13 ponies entered - across the 3 age related sections - and 12 ponies competed on the day.  Entry was open to BD registered and un-registered ponies up to and including 148cms (149 cms with shoes) in height and riders/owners did not have to be BD members and could be any age.

The Overall Champion was the top 4 year old pony, the German-bred stallion Der Kleine Lord (pictured wearing his SPSS Thermatex Rug prize), ridden by Erin Williams and owned by her mother, Clare.  Reserve Champion was the second placed 4 year old, the British bred gelding Johnny Cash, ridden by Phoebe Peters, owned by Noah Springall and bred by Mrs C Springall.  Click here to read more about these and other prize winners.

The SPSS is very grateful for the support of the judges, Jenny Ward and Sarah Pidgley, British Dressage (who kindly donated vouchers to the highest scoring pony in each age group) and Vale View who hosted the event.

Exciting New Elite Stallion to Display at Grading Day

We are delighted to announce that top dressage pony stallion Rembrandt DDH will be joining the ranks of SPSS ELITE stallions in 2012.  To celebrate this, Rembrandt with his rider Maisie Scruton will be giving a dressage to music display at the SPSS Mare & Stallion Gradings on Saturday 1st October at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre, Bucks LU7 9BT. The mare grading will be in the morning, the stallion grading in the afternoon and Rembrandt's display will take place at lunchtime.  More information about the 2011 Gradings can be found here.

Rembrandt and Maisie are pictured on the left at the 2011 Pony European Championships

Rembrandt DDH, is a 10 year old black German Riding Pony (Weser Ems) by Renoir out of Prinzess (by Viktoria's Chirac) and he is licensed by the Weser Ems and the NWPCS (as he is 43.75% Welsh).  Ridden by Maria van den Dugen, Rembrandt was a member of the Nederlands team at both the 2009 and 2010 Pony European Championships.  In 2009, they won Team Silver then, in 2010, Rembrandt and Maria won Team Gold, placing 2nd in the team test and 4th in both the Individual and Kur tests.

Following this, Rembrandt moved to the UK to be ridden by Maisie Scruton and, despite it being Maisie's first Championships and her only having ridden Rembrandt for less than a year, they were selected for the British team for the 2011 Pony European Championships.  At the Championships, they scored an impressive personal best of 72.25% to take 6th place and be the highest scoring British combinations.  Maisie and Rembrandt then went on to score well in the Individual (71.842%) and Kur Championships (73.525%), being placed 9th both times.

2011 In-Hand Show - Results and Report

The 2011 SPSS In-Hand Premium Youngstock Show was held at Hartpury College on the 27th August and although the late date and venue change reduced the number of youngstock entered this year, the quality was still very high.  Indeed, the Supreme Champion, colt foal Woodlander Wales (pictured on right), received the outstanding mark of 9.4 from judges Celia Clarke (GB) and Frenk Jespers (NED).  Woodlander Wales was also the top scoring Sports Pony in the 2011 Futurity Evaluations, gaining an Elite Premium.  This lovely colt is by Woodlander Wavavoom out of the Welsh Section C Drysiog Helen (by Talan Teifion).

Young Pony Dressage Class at Sheepgate on 27th Aug

Sheepgate Equestrian have included a Young Pony Freestyle Dressage Class in the schedule for their prestigious Under 25s National Championships.  The Young Pony Class is open to 4, 5 and 6 year old ponies and takes place on Sunday 27th August.   Sponsored by the on-site shop, Sheepgate Tack and Togs, there will be a sash, trophy and £40 to each of the highest scoring 4 year old, 5 year old and 6 year old.  The 2nd and 3rd placed ponies in each section will receive vouchers and there will also be prizes in kind given by Spartan.

The entry fee is £20 and although entries officially close on the 8th August, late entries may be possible.  Each pony will have 5 minutes in the arena in which to perform walk, trot and canter on both reins, show an ability to lengthen the stride and some stretching.  The floor pattern is up to the rider thus giving the rider opportunity to show their pony off to it's best advantage.

Fantastic Final Day at Pony Europeans

Top performances by British riders resulted in a clutch of medals on the final day of the Pony European Championships in Jaszkowo, Poland. In the morning, the Eventing team, despite losing their top scoring pony when it failed the vet inspection, still managed to win the Team Bronze medal with Sam Ecroyd and Three Wells Breeze producing a lovely clear round to finish on their dressage score and claim individual Silver.

In the final dressage competition, the Kur, as expected, the top placings went to German and Dutch riders, but British riders Erin Williams and Danny Boy B scored 74.25% for 8th place and Maisie Scruton and Rembrandt DDH scored 73.525 for 9th place.

The final event of the Championships was the Individual Jumping.  Beth Vernon and British bred mare Falaza went into this stage with zero faults, but 4 faults in the first round opened up the competition. Happily, Beth and Falaza made no more mistakes and finished as Individual GOLD MEDALLISTS.  Jessica Mendoza and Tixylix also performed brilliantly to take the Individual Bronze medal.  Both Beth and Jessica were also members of the Gold Medal winning British team.  More information about all the day's results here.

Jumping Team Gold for GB at Pony Europeans

Great performances by the British Jumping team earned them the Team Gold Medal in the 2011 Pony European Jumping Championships ahead of Ireland and the Nederlands.  The British team of Amy Inglis (Nils d'Hurl Vent), Beth Vernon (Falaza), Graham Babes (Dollar Girl) and Jessica Mendoza (Tixylix) put in top performances to take the Gold medals by the narrowest of margins as Ireland (last year's Team Silver medallists) finished only 1 mark behind. Read more (including an update on the Individual Dressage) here.

The Eventing team made a good start lying in 2nd place only 5 marks behind the leaders, France, after the dressage.

The Dressage team were narrowly beaten in to 4th place by Denmark. Sadly a mistake by the organisers had led to the announcement of a tie for Bronze between GB and Denmark and both teams shared the podium and medals until a correction was made and the British girls had to relinquish their medals, which, it is reported, they did with dignity despite being devastated by the news. The British-bred SPSS Elite Graded mare, Catherston Nutsafe, is in contention for this year’s Pony European Eventing Team.  With rider Sam Ecroyd, Nutsafe (by Catherston Nightsafe out of Catherston Dauntless (by Dutch Courage)) won Team Gold in 2010 and with her previous rider, Ella McEwen, Nutsafe also won Team Silver in 2008 and 2009.  Although rider Sam has a definite place as one of the six riders picked for the squad at this stage, he also has another pony qualified for the team and so a decision between Nutsafe and his other pony will not be made until after the final squad outing at Barbury Castle (8 – 10th July) in the Open Novice class.  More about selected ponies and riders is given on the Team GBR website -here.

Catherston Nutsafe was bred by Lizzie Murray and as well as her outstanding European Championships record, Nutsafe had a 2008 foal (by embryo transfer) that took the title of ‘2008 Futurity Pony Foal Champion’ recording an elite score of 9.0 and winning her dam a broodmare diploma.  Nutsafe was awarded the 2008 SPSS Dancer Medal in recognition of her achievements.

The 2011 Pony European Championships are being held from 26th - 31st July in Jaszkowo, Poland - more information about the Championships and the other selected ponies and rider can be found on our Pony Europeans 2011 page - here.  The SPSS will have representatives at the event and, provided that there is internet access, hope to have daily updates.

Announcing the 2011 SPSS Potential Showjumping Pony Championships

The 2011 SPSS Potential Showjumping Pony Championships is being held alongside the SPSS Potential Event Pony Championships as part of the 2011 IPS Auction.  The classes will take place on Sunday 18th September at South View Competition & Training Centre, Wettenhall Green, Winsford Road, Wettenhall, Cheshire CW7 4DL.

The Championship classes are open to 4, 5 and 6 year old ponies which are 148cm (149cm with shoes) and under. Ponies may be affiliated British Showjumping ponies, Pony Club jumping ponies or young unproven ponies produced to jump.  Riders may be any age.  Competitors will be asked to jump a course of show jumps at an appropriate height for the pony's age and size (maximum heights are expected to be: 4 years - 85cm, 5 years - 95cm, 6 years - 1.05m).  It is also anticipated that the judging will be similar to last year where the results of the class were determined on a score basis with 4 points being allocated for each of the fences cleared and then the judge (a BS accredited coach) allocated marks out of 10 for each of Style, Temperament and Potential to give an overall score.

South View Equestrian Centre is a popular venue that provides top class facilities with excellent surfaces by Charles Britton and the famous cafe bar providing a warm welcome so competitors, their supporters and other spectators can look forward to a relaxing and interesting weekend viewing all types of ponies destined for the competition market.

More information about the Event (including entry forms) will be available through the Events page soon.

A Tribute to Tibby - Raising an Orphan Foal

SPSS Committee Member, Jane Hoskin was devastated when she was left with a 2 month old foal to rear after her mare, De Primadonna, died suddenly last year.  However, Jane was ably assisted in her task by 31 year old retired lead rein pony, Forlan Tribute, known as Tibby. "Nanny" Tibby and his young charge are pictured on the left; click here to read Jane's tribute to Tibby.

News of Paler Shade of Grey

Owner Hannah Owen reports that SPSS Graded Mare, "Paler Shade of Grey", recently flew around the course in a 2'9" Hunter Trial competition. Aged 19 and one of the few ponies in the class, Holly belied her years and her diminutive size (13.1hh) to jump a competitive, fast and foot perfect round - including pulling up to walk to open and close a gate before continuing around the course which also included drop fences, a sunken road and a water complex.

Holly graded into the SPSS Preliminary Studbook in 2006 but her excellent score of 80% would have put her in the prestigious SPSS Head Studbook score had her breeding bee known.  Holly's scores included 9/10 for loose jumping and 18/20 for temperament.

In 2008, Holly had a filly foal by SPSS Elite sire Laban. Named Cherryhills Arctic Kiss, this foal has been presented at the Futurity evaluations each year, achieving First Premiums as a foal and yearling, then last year, aged 2, gained a High First Premium, was highest scoring 2 year old eventer at her Evaluation, qualified for the Eventing Final at Osberton and finished the year as the highest scoring 2 year old Sports Pony and 5th highest scoring of all 2 year olds in the Eventing section.

Announcing the 2011 SPSS Young Dressage Pony Championships

The SPSS is delighted to announce that the 2011 Young Dressage Pony Championships will be held at Vale View Equestrian, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire on Sunday 11th September.  This Championships is being sponsored by the SPSS, supported by BD and organised and run by VVEq as part of their BD Affiliated Show on that date - so there are other classes (including unaffiliated so open to non-BD members/ponies) running offering the opportunity for Young Ponies to be entered in another classes if desired

There are sections for 4, 5 and 6 year old ponies and there are no qualifiers, so entry is direct to the Championships and is open to BD registered and un-registered ponies up to and including 148cms (149cms with shoes) in height and riders/owners need not be BD members and may be any age.  Although late entries will be accepted if there is still space in the class, early entry is advised.  More information is available here

2011 Year Book and Stallion Guide

Following from last year’s successful “10th Anniversary Souvenir Booklet and Stallion Guide”, the SPSS has produced a “2011 Year Book and Stallion Guide”. The booklet is 60 pages of full colour on glossy paper and we have 1,000 to give away throughout the year at major pony and breeding events (including the BEF Futurity Evaluations). Within the booklet there are articles, reviews of 2010 events and information about a selection of SPSS stallions.

The booklet has been posted to our membership mailing list. If anyone else wants a copy by post then please send an A5 stamped addressed envelope (with £1.09 postage for 1st class or 92p for 2nd class) per copy to: SPSS Booklet c/o The Last House, Keysoe Row West Keysoe Bedfordshire MK44 2JJ.

2010 Dancer Medal awarded to SOS Kantje's Unicolor

The 2010 SPSS Dancer Medal has been awarded to the SPSS Graded stallion SOS Kantje's Unicolor for excellence in breeding and, in particular, his progeny results from 2007-10 in the BEF Futurity evaluations giving him the top ranking position in the “all years” Sports Pony list at the end of 2010. In addition, his filly foal, SOS What Apricot Wants gained an Elite score in 2010 and was the highest scoring Sports Pony across all ages and disciplines.

The SPSS instigated the Dancer Medal in 2007 as testimony to the achievements of the pony stallion Dancer, better known in the UK as Broomford Dancer. During Dancer’s illustrious career he represented Holland and Great Britain at the European Pony Dressage Championships and is also a renowned sire of some of Europe’s top pony stallions and performance ponies.

The Medal is an original piece of artwork commissioned by the SPSS from Belinda Sillars and is modelled on Dancer himself. It is a discretionary award given annually to a worthy SPSS registered pony that has achieved excellence in either competition or breeding.

SOS Kantje’s Unicolor is a Netherlands New Forest Pony by Berkhof’s Higgledy Piggledy out of Kantje’s Odessa (by Watershof Pretendent). Unicolor was bred in Holland by Firma van de Rakt and imported to the UK aged 2 1/2 by Georgia and Matthew Stokes of SOS Horses.

Alongside his stud career, Unicolor is a consistent competitor with regular wins in all disciplines. He has repeatedly qualified for the National and Regional Dressage Championships as well as winning numerous Working Hunter Pony classes. Unicolor is often seen out hunting ridden by 11 year old, Redvers Stokes (his rider in the picture opposite).

Another New Stallion for 2011

Another young stallion has joined the 2011 SPSS Stallion List.  Belafonte d'Avalon was bred in the US by Jos Mottershead and Kathy St Martin and is an ISR (International Sporthorse Registry) Sport Pony.  Belafonte is by the Weser Ems (and SPSS) sire Hilken's Black Delight out of a homebred mare by Mannhattan, a North American Oldenburg jumping stallion.

Belafonte was presented at the July 2010 US Weser-Ems Inspection and was approved with a good score subject to him successfully completing the FN approved 30 Day Performance Test and, despite being only 3 years old and  recently backed,  he successfully completed this test in October the same year gaining a good final score of 8.36.  2011 will be Belafonte's first season at stud and his frozen semen available in the UK through Equine Reproduction Ltd. For more information and pictures, see Belafonte's stallion page here

2011 Stallion List Now Available

The 2011 Stallion List is now available here  In addition to our established and well known stallions there are a few exciting additions to the list.  Although the 2010 Stallion Grading Champion, Bernwode Broadway, is focussing on his ridden career this year we are delighted that both the Reserve Champion and 3rd placed stallion at the 2010 Grading, Welsh Section B Rotherwood Signature, and the SPSS registered Sports Pony, LE Chiffre, will be available to mare owners for the 2011 stud season.  The first Welsh Section A to grade, Tresparrett Spirit of Two-Rivers, and the Welsh Section B, Chiskin Jaguar have joined the 2011 list along with two new stallions that have graded with other studbooks, the German bred and graded Dark Knight and the Scottish Sports Pony Domingo's Golden Surprise.  Finally, we are delighted that the SPSS Elite sire, Top Yellow, will be standing at stud again this year, by frozen semen, and that he has found a new young rider in Elllie Jolleys.  The combination are pictured on the right at a competition last Autumn.

The British Stallion Event Report

The 2011 British Stallion Event took place on the 29th January at the Hartpury Arena and a near capacity crowd saw around 60 lovely stallions perform during the afternoon and evening.  The SPSS was delighted to have six representatives present. The SPSS graded Knabstrupper, Rughavens Jackpot (known as "JJ"), had a difficult slot as he followed the opening 'taster' during which the audience had been encouraged to make as much noise as possible!  JJ held his nerve though and even ignored a falling banner during his performance!

The next SPSS representatives were the two Caesar 171 sons, LE Chiffre (aka "Peanut") and Rosewater I Claudius ("Claud") - both young and inexperienced.  The younger of the two, Peanut, had only been backed a short while before the display, but both he and Claud rose to the occasion and it was lovely to see them in the arena together. Hartpury resident, Bernwode Benedict, looked a little surprised to find his home territory packed with people and noise yet didn't put a hoof out of place and, with his young student rider Megan Pankhurst, gave another pleasing display.  Littledale Bright Star followed with the youngest rider of the day which was fitting as he was also the smallest stallion there by over a hand!  Interestingly, Jenny Loriston-Clarke bred both the sire of the stallion and the mother of the rider!!

The amazing European Pony Team Silver and Bronze medallist, Caesar 171, also took part and, despite his 22 years of age, his performance was phenomenal.  This small stallion rose to the occasion and was clearly delighted to be back in front of an audience after a number of years in semi-retirement not only showing the required elements of an FEI pony test but also demonstrating a perfect flying change.  Caesar's rider, Sam Brown, said afterwards 'He does tempi changes at home and I wish we had included them in our display'.  It was lovely to see one of the SPSS's most senior stallions impressing the crowds and receiving considerable applause as he left the arena.

Pictures of the stallions can be viewed (and purchased!!) on photographer Kevin Sparrow's website  - here

British Breeders SPSS Performance and Breeding Award

At the 2011 Breeders Dinner & Awards Ceremony (organised by the British Horse Foundation), SPSS Founder Director and Studbook Manager, Sarah Steggall, presented the British Breeders SPSS Performance and Breeding Award 2010 to Caesar 171 (Condor x Askan), a rising 22 year old bay Weser Ems stallion bred by Benno Stolle in Germany.  Now owned by Samantha Brown of Godrics Stud (which is based at Leamside Equestrian in County Durham),  Caesar was bred and graded in Germany gaining a good score in his performance test (including two 10s).  After being imported to the UK, Caesar achieved an impressive dressage performance record being British Dressage Restricted Medium Winter Champion in 2000, a member of the GB Pony Team that won Silver at the European Championships in Germany in 2000 and the Bronze medal winning team in 2002.

Caesar is graded Elite with the SPSS in recognition of his International competition successes and, despite his competition career taking precedence for many years, he is also a successful sire.  Caesar has graded sons and daughters in Germany and is damsire of the Reserve Bundeschampion in 2008 & 2009.  His oldest UK progeny are only now rising 5 years old but he has already sired 2 SPSS graded sons and a SPSS graded daughter.  At the 2008 British Breeders Awards, LE Chiffre (Caesar 171 x Donnerwetter) was awarded the trophy for "Best British Bred Pony Foal".

SPSS Breeders Rewarded at British Breeders Dinner

At the British Horse Foundation's Breeders Dinner & Awards Ceremony in January 2011, the Baileys Horse Feeds/British Breeding Futurity Awards were almost a clean sweep for SPSS breeders and their ponies!

Futurity Certificates of Merit were given to the highest scorers in each age group and discipline and in the Sports Pony section, 3 of the 4 Certificates went to SPSS members. These were:

Sports pony foal – SOS What Apricot Wants (SOS Kantje's Unicolor x Proset) – Georgia Stokes of SOS Horses

Sports pony yearling – Bathleyhills Monet (Casino Royale K x Matcho) – bred by Penny Walster of Bathley Hill Farm Stud

Sports pony three year old – Rosewater Breant (Bernwode Brokat x Dornik B) – bred by Sarah Eberle of Rosewater Sports Ponies

The Leading Sire of Sports Ponies was also awarded a Certificate of Merit based on the results gained by his progeny entered in the 2010 evaluations as Sports Ponies. Once again, the recipient of this award was the Bernwode Stud's Bernwode Brokat (Brillant x Diamant II). Brokat is an established SPSS graded sire who is producing top quality stock each year as proven by his 2009 Futurity 'All Years' Leading Sire of Sports Ponies title. In 2010, Brokat had the excellent average score of 8.84 from his top 3 progeny with the contributing scores coming from the Elite Premium foal Treasure (out of The Wexford Lady by Fine Blade) who also achieved 4th place at the Futurity Event Horse Finals at Osberton; High First Premium (and highest scoring 3 year old sports pony) Rosewater Breant (out of Delphi by Dornick B) and High First Premium 2 year old Kingswalk Moonraker (out of Kingswalk Sheer Havoc by Chidock Fankino).

To complete a perfect result for SPSS Ponies, Bathley Hill Farm Stud's Mona (Matcho x Silvertops Ricco) was awarded the "Leading Sports Pony Dam" Certificate of Merit based an average progeny score of 8.43.  The contributors to this score were the yearling Bathleyhills Monet (by Casino Royale K) who achieved Elite Premium level and the foal Bathleyhills Mondial (by FS Don't Worry). Sadly, this proven mare died a few hours after Bathleyhills Mondial was born - a significant loss both for Bathley Hill Farm Stud and British sports pony breeding. Read more here

The entries open for the 2011 Futurity Evaluations on 1st June, from a link on this part of the BEF website.  Hopefully 2011 will be another great year for SPSS ponies!!

Guidance on Obtaining a Passport

The Information/FAQ and Passports pages contain guidance about how to get a passport for your foal - PLEASE READ before submitting a passport application as it will help Head Office process your passport quickly and mean that you won't have to get your vet out again to complete missing paperwork/DNA/ID chip.

IMPORTANT NOTICE about Foal Registrations

Please note that DEFRA have mandated that additional information is included on the ID page of all passports from 1 July 09.  Hence, it is important that the ID section of NEW version of the Youngstock Registration Form is completed by a vet rather than the back of the covering certificate as that ID section is now out of date.  The latest version of the Youngstock Registration Form has Sep 10 in top right corner (click here to download).   Please call Head Office (contact details at top of page) if you have any queries.

So to summarise:  All foal registrations after 1st July 09 require a completed Youngstock Registration form (Sep 10 version) with the ID page completed by a Vet.
