Origins |
|
Sire: Berkhof’s Higgledy Piggledy was born in 1981 and was a 1.47m palomino Nederlands New Forest Pony (NNFP) with good movement who competed at Z-level in jumping and M-level in dressage. He was licensed by the NNFPS in 1984 and passed his performance test in 1986 - gaining good scores for Characteter (9) and Temperament/Obedience, Ridden Jumping and “Terreinrit” (all 8s). A 1998 review of his progeny by the NNFPS assessed 3 foals, 6 yearlings, 3 2-yr-olds and 3- 3-yr-olds and having assessed the dam’s as having “moderate to sufficient” quality, his progeny were described as “beautiful types with uniform size”, with good muscle & confirmation and trots that were “strong and easy”, with no differences between the yearlings to 3 yr olds.
Dam: Kantje's Odessa was awarded the Ster predicate as was her dam, Kantje's Maradonie.
Damsire: Watershof Pretendent won his performance test at 4 years old and stood in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. As well as being a capable jumper himself, Pretendent produced some excellent sport ponies, such as the international M.V. Augusta and Golden Valley (for Holland), Kantje’s Norman and Franklin (for Belgium), Unicom (for Italy) and Jolly Sting.
Pretendent's most famous offspring are the successful breeding stallion, Kantje’s Ronaldo (sire of European Pony Jumping Team Gold medallist Karwin and 10 other European Pony Competitors) and the European Pony Jumping Champion Mister Amontilano (formerly Léon, then Reach Léon). Mister Amontilano won Team Gold and Individual Silver medals in 2003 then went one better the following year winning both Team and Individual Gold medals.

This Dutch New Forest Pony stallion was imported into the UK in 2003 and impressed the judges at his SPSS grading in 2005 showing an easy temperament, excellent movement and good natural jumping ability.
Early in his ridden career, he was Champion Working Hunter Pony 6 times without a fault in any round of fences. In 2007, he qualified for the Burghley Young Event Pony Finals with an impressive score.
In 2007, Unicolor was registered with British Dressage and with his owner, quickly gained points and qualified at Novice Music. In 2008, 15 year old Emily Grange started competing him and they qualified for the Summer 2009 Regional Championships at Preliminary level where they placed 4th and qualified for the 2009 National Championships. The combination also qualified for the 2009/10 Winter Regional Championships at Preliminary and Novice levels where they placed 6th in the Preliminary Class.
He has competed in show jumping, one day events and is hunted twice a week. Some of this early hunting was with his owner's son, Redvers, on his 11hh pony on the lead rein (picture above left). Now, Redvers hunts Unicolor himself - they are pictured (above left) clearing a Cornish stone wall when Redvers was 11.
In September 2011, after a lengthy gap, Unicolor returned to dressage competition ridden by Emily Grange. At their first show they won two classes, scoring over 68% in both and qualifying for a British Dressage Area Festival. Unicolor and Emily then went on to win the Area Festival Novice Restricted Championships at Tall Trees, Cornwall on the 2nd October and so qualified for the prestigious Pet Plan Area Festival Finals in April 2012. Unicolor then spent the winter hunting with Redvers.
One of only a few ponies at the British Dressage Winter Championships and Pet Plan Area Festival Finals, Unicolor and Emily did extremely well and were joint winners of the the first round with 68.87%. The top 15 from each of the two groups went forward to the afternoon's second round. Emily again rode Nippy very professionally to score 68.39% and finished 4th overall.
In August 2012, 12 year old Poppy Padley started riding Unicolor and not only did they quickly gain Area Festival Qualification at Novice Restricted but they also competed at the Home International at Bishop Burton for the South West BYRDS team. In September, Poppy and Unicolor won their class at the Tall Trees Petplan Area Festival with over 70% - and nearly 3% ahead of the second place competitors. So Unicolor once again qualified for the Pet Plan Area Festival Finals.
At the 2013 Area Festival Finals, in a class where most riders were far older, Poppy & Unicolor did well to be 4th in the first round and then 7th in the final round. At the BYRDS Inter-Regional at the end of June, they were 2nd overall in the C Squad competition, which helped them gain selection to represent their Region again at the BYRDS Home International, where their team placed 10th (out of 25 teams).
Then in early September, Poppy and Unicolor placed 3rd in the Elementary Restricted Pet Plan Area Festival class at Wellington Riding and this has qualified them for the Area Festival Final at the British Dressage Winter Championships in April 2014. Poppy and Nippy are pictured (bottom left) at the end of their Area Festival class. |
Offspring/Breeding Advice | |
Unicolor's temperament is second to none and he is well known in the local pony club, where he has been ridden by several different children in different disciplines. He is stamping his stock with beautiful heads, elegance and fabulous temperaments, even on the sharpest mares. A very much loved family pet.
In 2010, Unicolor was awarded the SPSS Dancer Medal for excellence in breeding and, in particular, his progeny results in the 2010 BEF Futurity Evaluations which included his filly foal, SOS What Apricot Wants being awarded an Elite Premium and finishing as the highest scoring Sports Pony over all evaluations.
In the BEF Futurity Evaluations in 2010, Unicolor was the highest ranked SPSS graded stallion when considering the average of their Top 3 progeny scores, regardless of whether they were entered as Sports Ponies or not. Indeed, Unicolor raked 8th over all in the stallion list (out of a total of 70 stallions with at least 3 progeny evaluated in 2010). A fantastic achievement for a pony stallion to rank above significant and successful stallions like Mill Law, Balou de Rouet, Jumbo, Showmaker and Kings Composer.
In 2008 and 2009, all of Unicolor's progeny evaluated at a BEF Futurity Evaluation scored First or High First premiums. In 2010, as well as his Elite scoring foal, SOS What Apricot Wants (pictured in Progeny section below), 3 of his other offspring gained High First Premiums. In 2011, five of Unicolor's progeny were evaluated and all bar one gained a high first premium. There weren't any of his progeny evaluated in 2012 or 2013. Overall, Unicolor has 16 progeny scores and the average of these is 8.47. If just his top 5 progeny scores are considered then the average of these is an excellent 8.91.
