SPSS FIRST STUD BOOK TO SIGN NEW NED CONTRACT

Before presenting the awards to the winners of the SPSS-sponsored awards at the 15th Annual British Breeding Annual Breeders Dinner and Awards Ceremony, held on Saturday 12 January 2008 at the Grange City Hotel in London, the Chair of the SPSS, Celia Clarke, made the following short speech, highlighting yet again that the SPSS is at the very forefront of studbook development in the UK:

She said:

I am delighted to be able to present these Awards on behalf on the Sports Pony Studbook Society, the only studbook in the UK solely devoted to the development of a British-bred sports pony. Ever since it was formed in 2000 the SPSS had been seeking ways to promote performance pedigrees in sports pony breeding and we consider that the Futurity scheme is the ideal way to do it.

You also heard Mike Tucker and Desi Dillingham mention NED earlier on and it may be of interest for you all to know that in order for our ponies’ records to be as complete as possible we uploaded verified breeding data to NED from the very beginning of its development, We are therefore delighted to be able to take this opportunity to be able to hand over our signed copies of the new contract for providers of verified data to NED this evening and we very strongly urge all other studbooks and disciplines in the industry to do so as well as soon as possible.

We firmly believe that providing this data for use when NED goes on line will greatly enhance the marketing of British horses and ponies. From personal experience I can say that in many cases, identifying this years award winners took only 10% of the time that it has in the past, even using the Beta testing system. So we present these awards with sincere thanks to the BEF Board for taking on NED and making it so much easier for us this year!

The awards were:

Top Scoring Pony in the BEF Futurity Scheme, which was won by LE Chiffre (Caesar 171/Tiger Lily by Donnerwetter) owned and bred by Mrs Bev Brown

and

Top Pony Sire of Performance Ponies, which was won by Laban (Aleksander/Esmiralda) bred in Denmark, graded SPSS Elite and owned by Michelle Thompson

Our sincerest congratulations to all concerned.
