Wayland Loganberry Foal wins in Australia

Caroline Saker of Wayland Stud reports that the first foal by Wayland Loganberry born in Australia, Bain Park Shiraz, is growing well and has a beautiful temperament, and they think he will make about 13.3 to 14.00 hands.  He was taken to his first show, which was the major pony show in Australia, the "APSB 41st Pony Show" where he won New Forest Yearling Colt and went on to become Reserve Champion New Forest Colt or Stallion.

The beautiful photograph of Shiraz is by Sandy Morphett and is reproduced with her kind permission; her design website is www.horsephotos.com.au

Laban wins Veteran Class & Championship

SPSS Elite Stallion Laban started his in-hand career in 2005, fitting in competitions around a busy stud season to win the in-hand veteran and then the overall in-hand championship first time out in 2005.  We look forward to hearing how he gets on in 2006.

Frozen Semen Accepted in America!

Many of our stallion owners have been receiving a growing number of requests for frozen semen from American pony breeders.  This prompted us to approach the ASPR with regard to registering the foals born in the USA.  We are delighted to inform our members that our grading process has now been accepted by the ASPR and that foals born in America by our licensed and graded stallions will be eligible for documentation, assessment and awards by this studbook.  The ASPR is a division of the American Warmblood Registry for horses and also covers registrations from Canada.  Details are still being discussed between the studbooks but anyone interested in finding out more should call Sarah at the Head Office (contact details at top of page)

New Head Stud Book Mare

The TB mare "Simnel" has been successfully graded with the SPSS.  Simnel is a 6 year old, 15hh, dark bay mare who is by "Turtle Island" out of a "Taufan" mare and was bred in Ireland.  Simnel is thought to be the only Head Stud Book Broodmare in the country who is graded with both the SPSS and the SHB(GB).  Simnel had a foal in 2005 and is now back in training and it is hoped that she will return to the racetrack in 2006.  The picture shows Simnel at her first ever show, the National In-Hand Show at Worcestershire in June 2005, where Simnel was 3rd in both of her classes.  For more pictures and information on Simnel - click here

Aimbry Chester colt to be presented for Grading in 2006

SPSS member, Trudy Goulding of End House Stud, reports that they have decided to present their 2 year old colt, Thursden Vallye Raphael, by SPSS Graded Stallion Aimbry Chester out of Graded Sports Pony Mare Berry Rose Dawn Chorus, at the October 2006 Grading.  Raphael was first seen by the SPSS as a foal at the Mare Grading and is an example of how well the Sports Pony System works by mixing the smaller Warmblood Stallions with English-bred pony mares.

2005 Grading Results

SPSS is delighted to announce that 8 stallions passed this year's grading even though the mark required was raised to 75%.  In addition, 9 mares graded including the European Team Bronze medallist in 1996, Sapphire Blue, who was awarded Elite status in recognition of her outstanding competition record.  This lovely mare is now in foal to Mill Law.

Pictured on right is the second placed mare, Sharron, who was graded into the Head Stud book.  Sharron should have been ridden at the grading by her owner, Kyra Harris, but she fractured her foot a few weeks before the grading.  However, although her Mum had to do the running, Kyra managed to lead Sharron in the final line up.

SPSS Ponies win at British Dressage Young Horse and Breeding Championships 2005

The Championships were held on the 25th and 26th June and SPSS ponies performed well.  The highest scoring pony in the ridden Dressage Pony classes was Rosewater Sports Ponies' SPSS registered 5 year old Dornroschen.  SPSS Licensed stallion Bernwode Nirvana at his first show was second in the four year old class - incredibly, Nirvana was only backed in March!

The Dressage Pony Breeding Champion was Sheepcote Red Lady and the Reserve was Wurlibird - both by the latest addition to the SPSS stallion lists - Sheepcote Wurlitzer.  As neither the champion or Reserve are registered with the SPSS, the winner of the SPSS sash was Woodwalton Bhaltair (by Bernwode Brokat) who won the Colts/Geldings Youngstock section and was then 3rd behind the eventual champion and reserve in the overall youngstock class.

In addition, SPSS graded stallion Bernwode Brokat ridden by 14 year old Emma Barnes took on the 'big boys' and was placed 9th in the open Freestyle Championship for Stallions.  The winners were the top senior combination of Wild Dancer and Peter Storr.  Brokat was the only pony in the class.

Sheepcote Wurlitzer by Weltmeyer joins SPSS Graded Stallion list

The recent increase in the height limit for SPSS stallions has allowed the established dressage stallion Sheepcote Wurlitzer to join the list of graded stallions.  Wurlitzer is by Weltmeyer out of Calista (by Lucky Boy xx) and stands at 15.2hh.  He has achieved success in British Dressage competitions up to Grand Prix level and sired the 2005 Dressage Pony Breeding Champion and Reserve

Success for Paddocklow Persephone at County Show

Tina Carswell reports that their yearling filly (13 months old), by SPSS Stallion Aimbry Chester out of the SPSS Graded mare Paddock Paragon, won the Yearling Sport Horse Breeding class at this year's Newark & Notts County Show and then went on to take the Reserve Champion Sport horse.

Grading Height Raised for Stallions

In 2004 the SPSS raised the height limit of grading mares from 153 cms (15 hh) to 158 cms (15.2hh) with the intention of encouraging breeders to consider using a smaller SPSS stallion to breed down.  This method has been much used on the continent where the smaller warmblood mare has played a large part in breeding movement and jumping ability into the sports pony.  Having received many requests, the SPSS has decided to extend this height limit of 158 cms to include grading stallions in order to take advantage of the valuable bloodlines available.  We hope that this will open opportunities to our mare owners and attract several of the smaller stallions graded with other studbooks who have been unable to get true recognition for their offspring from pony mares.

British Dressage Young Horse and Breeding Championships 2005

British Dressage is to continue its classes for four, five and six year old  Potential Dressage Ponies at the British Dressage Young Horse and Breeding Championships to be held at Addington EC on June 25th & 26th.  Pony breeders in mainland Europe have enjoyed this structured system for many years and we see this development as a valuable breakthrough in the UK.  We hope that many of our members, and non members, will support this opportunity to give their young ponies competition experience specifically designed for their stages of training.  There is no restriction on the age of the rider but ponies may not exceed 148cms.

SPSS graded stallion, Bernwode Brokat, will be taking part in the Saturday evening Stallion Display and several of the younger SPSS stallions will be competing in their relevant age group classes.  Four year old ponies will compete the BD YHB4 2004 test, five year olds the BD YHN5 2004 Test and the six year olds the BD YHE6 2004 Test.  Contact BD on

The in hand classes for broodmares, foals, yearlings, two and three year olds (with potential to produce/become dressage ponies) will take place on Saturday June 25th. Information on  format and correct dress for handlers can be obtained from the SPSS Head Office.

The SPSS will be awarding special rosettes to the highest placed SPSS graded pony in each of the relevant classes. A sash will also be awarded to any SPSS pony mare or SPSS registered youngstock reaching the final in-hand Championship

Nicki Oldershaw of Larnleigh Stud reports that SPSS graded stallion Betws Enfys has been out hunting with the South Notts on a number of occasions this season and that he thoroughly enjoys it!! She says that "His jumping has come on no end and he has cleared some huge ditches! Just goes to prove the versatility of the Welsh Sec C as although only 13hh he keeps up with the big boys! And for a stallion out in mixed company his behaviour has been exceptional!"
