In 2018, the SPSS Tour took in 5 public venues which were combined into Regions for the purposes of declaring Regional Stallion & Mare Champions. The grading judges were Hans-Heinrich Brüning (an international judge & breeder of Hanoverian dressage and jumping horses) and SPSS Chairman & Director, Jacke Mathieson (a dressage rider, stallion owner and breeder of competition horses and ponies).
Stallion Gradings
13 stallions were presented and they were split into 3 regions for Championships (Southern, Central & Northern (which included Scotland). Nine stallions were accepted and have completed the post-grading requirements. The 2018 SPSS Supreme Champion Stallion title was awarded to the Northern Grading Champion, Emily Cuthill’s lovely home-bred 3 year old, Wolken Von Blitz MPS (Stanley Grange Regal Heights x Wolkentanz). The Reserve Supreme Champion Stallion title went to the Central Stallion Champion, the smart 7 year old WPCS Sec D Deufor Spellbound who was bred by his owner Carys Taylor. Both stallions impressed the judges and scored over 80%. The Southern Regional Champion was Delaroche Black Gold (Hilkens Gold Card x Hilkens Black Delight), an SPSS passported 3 year old British-bred by Lucy Sheldrake and owned by Bennie Seymour. There is more information about these stallions and the others currently standing with the SPSS on the Stallion page
Mare Gradings
On the 2018 Tour, a total of 30 mares were assessed by judges Hans-Heinrich Brüning and Jacke Mathieson and a further mare was viewed when with her foal on the Elite Foals Registration Tour. All the mares graded with 9 achieving a Head Studbook score of 80% or more. Like the stallions, mares were grouped into regions for Championships then the highest scorer overall became the Supreme Champion. The 2018 Supreme Champion Mare title went to the SPSS passported 4 year old Bathleyhills Little Miss Sunshine (known as “Poppy”) who was British-bred by Emma-Jane Middlehurst then bought by Penny Walster of Bathleyhills Stud who had bred her dam, SPSS graded Bathleyhills Touch of Lustre (Thistledown Copper Lustre x Valiant). Poppy’s sire is the SPSS Elite graded Deutsches Reitpony Classic’s Charmeur who has competed internationally for GB in FEI Pony Dressage and Poppy was graded into the SPSS Head Studbook. The Reserve Supreme Champion Mare title also went to another Head Studbook mare bred for dressage, Jennifer Gilchrist’s home-bred 2 year old Romanno Pretty Lady who is by her own SPSS Elite graded stallion Boss Junior out of SPSS Elite graded Pretty-Women (Black Boy x Kompass).
Mare Performance Test
New for 2018, the SPSS held Mare Performance Tests where mares were viewed under saddle, ridden by both their regular rider and by a test rider. The Mare Performance Test Champion was another great result for Penny Walster when Bathleyhills Sea Breeze (Casino Royale K x Gigman Jacana), who Penny bred, was capably ridden by Daisy Powell then impressed test rider Anna Brown. The Reserve Champion was the part-bred Connemara Rudgeway Royal Occasion (Pro-Set x Olsin) who is the dam of the 2017 Futurity Champion Sports Pony Foal, Britannia’s Royal Blue (by Britannia’s Mail). British-bred by J Warr, Royal Occasion is owned by Jemma Colbourne and ridden by Issy Colbourne.
Youngstock Evaluations
The fourth SPSS Tour was another resounding success with our judges, Hans-Heinrich Brüning (an international judge & breeder of Hanoverian dressage and jumping horses) and SPSS Chairman & Director, Jacke Mathieson (a dressage rider, stallion owner and breeder of competition horses and ponies), evaluating 75 youngstock over 5 days. The evaluations were open to all pony and small horse youngstock of any breed, there was no need to be SPSS passported or registered, and entrants were judged on potential as a sports pony (or small horse). Overall, there were 49 foals; 12 yearlings; 9 two year olds and 5 three year olds forward for evaluation and, once again, British breeders presented some truly outstanding youngstock, with 34 of them impressing the judges with their athleticism, elastic gaits and modern sports type so that they scored 80% or higher and were awarded a coveted SPSS GOLD Premium. To the delight of the SPSS Studbook Manager, Lucy Sheldrake, of the youngstock awarded Gold Premiums over 60% of them had an SPSS graded sire and 17 also had an SPSS graded dam – showing that success at grading is linked to success at evaluation.
The SPSS stallion responsible for the highest number of Gold Premiums this year was Jennifer Gilchrist’s SPSS graded stallion Boss Junior who had 5 progeny forward for SPSS evaluation and a total of 4, a foal, 2 yearlings and a 2 year old, gained Gold Premiums. The next highest achieving stallion was Penny Walster’s British-bred SPSS graded stallion Bathleyhills Monet who also had 5 progeny evaluated with 3 (2 foals and a 2 year old) achieving Gold Premiums.
Best of the best and awarded the 2018 Supreme Youngstock Champion title was the athletic NPS passported colt foal, Romanno River Dance whose score of 87.25% is the highest given by SPSS judges to date. Described by Hans-Heinrich Brüning as a “the best mover with outstanding gaits” and “a sports pony through & through”, River Dance was bred by Jennifer Gilchrist and is by her NPS licensed stallion, Stanley Grange Regal Heights. River Dance’s dam, Mirage (Voyage x Night-Star) is also the dam of the 2015 SPSS Supreme Mare Grading Champion Mystique (by Argentino) and SPSS graded stallion Brando SD (by SPSS graded Hilkens Black Delight) who were both bred by SPSS member Debbie Bridges. River Dance was also the Top Foal, Top Colt and Top Pony.
