The five stallions below passed assessment at the Main Grading on 11th October 2014 and were awarded a license for an initial period of 3 years, thus giving them time to prove themselves in both competition and as a sire. Licensed stallions have their performance and/or progeny monitored by the SPSS. Fifteen stallions were presented on the day and the grading judges were Herr Hans-Heinrich Bruening and Mr Geoff Glazzard assisted by Miss Teri England and Mrs Jacke Mathieson.
The SPSS 2014 Stallion Champion was the 2 year old, WPCS Section D, Taraco Fabrizio. Bred by Miss T J Coppins of Taraco Stud, Fabrizio was bought by his owner, Claire Wyatt, as a weanling with the intention of him standing at stud as well as being aimed at the dressage arena. Fabrizio is by Danaway Flash Jack, who is both a multiple champion and sire of multiple champion Welsh Cobs, and also has classic names like Pentre Eiddwen Comet, Nebo Black Magic and Nebo Brenin. Fabrizio scored 81.15% and when commenting afterwards, Hans-Heinrich Bruening said "when you look at this pony he makes you smile". |

Reserve Champion was the 4 year old, Delaroche Brillanz. Another British-bred pony, SPSS passported "Brill" was bred by Lucy Sheldrake of Delaroche Stud in Wales and is still part owned by her. Brill is by the established SPSS Elite graded sire Bernwode Brokat and his dam, Evelina-S (Prins Alfred x Merrie Moscan) was also imported to the UK by Bernwode Stud. Brill is now part owned by 11 year old Amelia (known as Milly) Struel who backed him last year when he was 3 and she was 10. Janine Paterson rode Brill at the grading as Milly is so young, but it was Milly at the end of the jumping lane waiting to catch him each time and he always went straight to her. Milly's mother, Rachel Struel, spotted Brill as a foal and wanted him for Amelia from that moment. |
Third in the line up of successful stallions was the 6 year old Cremello WPCS Section D Cynheidrefawr Creme De La Creme (Crabbiesden Platinum x Leafycroft Maverick). Bred by Mrs B Randell and bought by his current owner, Helen Lomas, as a 4 year old, Creme de la Creme started competing at British Dressage at the beginning of 2014. Since then he has placed 2nd at the Preliminary Summer Regionals, was 7th in the Open Novice Petplan Area Festival at Burrows Court Farm and is qualified for the 2014 Open Novice Winter Regionals. All of these result have been with Kate Hudd riding. |
SPSS passported Godrics Campeggio was next in line. Bred by Beverly Brown of Leamside Equestrian and her daughter Sam, "Basil" is by their SPSS Elite graded and Pony European Championships Team Medal winning pony, Caesar 171 (who also sired the 2014 Mare Grading Champion). Basil's dam, Bernwode Mandy (Apslau xx x Caid AA) was bred in Germany by Jutta Bueber and is another top class pony imported by Bernwode Stud. Since coming to the UK, Mandy produced 5 other British born foals before her death earlier this year including the 2009 SPSS Stallion Grading Champion and her eldest British daughter, Bernwode Nairobi, is also SPSS graded. Basil himself was the 2009 SPSS In-Hand Premium Show Champion. |

Last but by no means least was the grey Irish Connemara Glencarrig Dolphin (Coosheen Stormboy x Coral Star). Bred by Padraic Curran and owned by Sue Browne and Nicola Baguley, 4 year old Dolphin has been competed lightly by Nicola this year but still achieved impressive results. In particular, they qualified for the prestigious British Eventing 4 year old Young Horse Championships at Osberton the weekend before the grading where he was the only pony in the class of 29 and finished in 10th place.

At the main grading on 10th October, all 8 mares forward graded into one of the SPSS Studbooks depending on grading score, performance record and completeness of pedigree. As at the next day's stallion grading, the judges were Herr Hans-Heinrich Bruening and Mr Geoff Glazzard assisted by Miss Teri England and Mrs Jacke Mathieson.
The Mare Champion with the impressive score of 82.31% was the 5 year old British bred Ella who was presented by Kelly Oxtoby for her owner/breeder, Julie Lockley of Bramley Stud. Kelly has only been riding Ella since February but in this time she has scored over 70% in both Novice and Elementary British Dressage classes and they were 4th at the Frys Summer Regional Championships (at Novice Open). Ella, who is by SPSS Elite graded Caesar 171 out of the KWPN mare Ballarena FH (Santano x Democrat), gained a Futurity Elite score of 9.04 as a foal and also had a foal herself 2 years ago by FS Don't Worry.
The Reserve Champion mare, Wolkendance, also scored over 80% but with unproven breeding on her dam's side, has gone into the Preliminary Stutbook. Wolkendance was bred by Tina Patchcott (as Tina Burton) out of Bella Rose, who Tina believes to be by a Dales stallion out of a black cob mare. Wolkendance has had Futurity First Premiums as a Foal, Yearling and Two Year Old (when she was the 2nd highest scoring nationally).
Of the remaining mares Romanno Mayflower (Lumes x Whalton Touch o'the Blues) and Daylight MW (Dornick B x Magister) both also went into the Head Studbook as they have good performance records. In Daylight's case, this performance record also resulted in her being awarded the prestigious SPSS Elite accolade as she represented GB at International Pony Dressage. |

Of the remaining mares forward at the grading 2 went into the Main Studbook as they had 2 generations of pedigree and scored over 70% and the other 2 went into the Preliminary Studbook as their pedigrees are incomplete.
