2012 Mare Champion and SPSS Elite Graded Madam's Miss Maria & Harriette Williams Photo by kind permission of Julia Shearwood Photography |
In 2012, a total of 2 new stallions and 13 new mares have graded into the SPSS studbook. In addition, a number of stallions graded by European sports pony studbooks have also been accepted as SPSS Stallions
The main 2012 grading took place at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre on the 29th September. The results are given below, with links to each pony's breeding.
Specialist equestrian photographer Julia Shearwood was attendance at the main
grading and the photos

The two stallions below passed assessment at the Main Grading in 2012 and were awarded a license for an initial period of 3 years. Licensed stallions have their performance and/or progeny monitored by the SPSS. The grading judges were Mrs Jennie Loriston-Clarke, Herr Hans-Heinrich Bruening and Mr Geoff Glazzard.
The SPSS 2012 Stallion Champion was the 4 year old, WFS Top Red. Bred in Britain by Yvonne Wood and Sarah Steggall and carrying the prefix WFS for Yvonne's "Wood Family Stud", Top Red is owned by Sarah Steggall and Elaine Coleridge Smith. Top Red is by the SPSS Elite graded stallion Top Yellow (DRP, Till The Champ (DRP) x Kirby Cane Bugler (Welsh Sec B)) out of the SPSS graded mare Bernwode Poppy Red (SPSS, Pilgrims Red (DRP) x Viktoria's Chirac (DRP)). Both Top Red's sire and damsire are past German Bundeschampions and Top Yellow also competed Internationally at Dressage. In his summing up at the presentations, German judge, Hans-Heinrich Bruening said that he considered Top Red to be a "top pony stallion" and also a "prospective international dressage pony". This view was confirmed when Top Red was also the Champion at following day's Young Dressage Pony Championship.
Reserve Champion was the 3 year old, Rosewater Mr Darcy. Another British-bred pony Mr Darcy was bred by Rosewater Stud's mother and daughter team, Sarah Eberle and Lucy Northcott who still own him. Mr Darcy is by the German sire FS Don't Worry (DRP, Dacapo Doro (DRP) x Golden Dancer (DRP)) out of the SPSS graded Rosewater Manakin (SPSS, Manitu N x Baledon Commanchero). Mr Darcy had only been backed a few weeks before the grading and the judges made particular comment on his temperament under saddle. Mr Darcy also has an international dressage stallion in his pedigree, with his damsire being the multiple team medallist, Manitu N

At the main grading, all 13 mares forward graded into one of the SPSS Studbooks depending on grading score, performance record and completeness of pedigree. The judges were Herr Hans-Heinrich Bruening and Mrs Celia Clarke.
The Mare Champion was the proven International dressage pony Madam's Miss Maria (NWPCS, Woldhoeve's Silco x Wester Aikema's Norbert). Madam's Miss Maria was bred in Holland by G P Kapma and then bought by current owners Becky and Hannah Moody as a two year old. Madam's Miss Maria (known as "Dot") was competed initially by Becky and one of her pupils and then, at the end of 2011, Harriette Williams took over the ride and after some promising results in the UK, they were selected to ride internationally at the Saumur, Moorsele and Compiegne CDI. Their results at these shows earned them a place on the British dressage team at the 2012 Pony European Championships, a remarkable achievement for a 7 year old pony. To recognise this outstanding achievement, Madam's Miss Maria was awarded the prestigious accolade of Elite and also presented with a SPSS Merit Award and Sash. Madam's Miss Maria's grading score of 88.85% put her into the Head Studbook and she also became the highest scoring SPSS graded mare to date.
The Reserve Champion mare, Bernwode Celeste, also scored well over 85% and went into the Head Studbook. British-bred by Sarah Steggall, Celeste is by the SPSS Elite sire Caesar 171 (DRP; Condor x Askan) who was a member of the British Pony Dressage Team that won silver and bronze Pony European Championships medals. Celeste's damsire, Bernwode Brokat (DRP; Brillant x Diamant II) is another Elite SPSS sire as he too has represented GB internationally as well as being the Futurity Leading Sire of Sports Ponies for 3 consecutive years. Further back in Celeste's pedigree on her dam's side is the great Swedish warmblood Urbino, who sired two Olympic dressage horses!!
Two more mares scored over 80% to go into the Head Studbook. They were the British-bred Bathleyhills Swift (Weser Ems; Casino Royale K x Thursden Vallye Raphael) and Spring Mead Autumn Breeze (Allacher x Strum), who is a British-bred Haflinger. Bathleyhills Swift was bred by her owner, Penny Walster and Spring Mead Autumn Breeze was bred by David Hurst and is owned by Gemma Gale.
A Mare-only Grading was also held in April 2012, judged by Celia Clarke and Gemma Robinson. Six mares were presented and three graded into the Head Studbook while the remaining three went into the Main Studbook. The highest scoring mare with 82% was Sue Halliday's 150cm KWPN, Carbon Copy (Mooiman x Brelades Ocean Starlight). Sue Halliday also owned the second highest scoring mare, the NPS registered Colbeach Starlette (Willow Bay Symphony x Wingrove Minkino) and Wadacre Stud's WPCS Sec A, Marsham Tansy (Pontblyddyn Cavalier X Pendock Trapeze) also went into the Head Studbook.
