2012 SPSS Young Jumping Pony & Young Eventing Pony Championships and other classes part of the IPS Auction Event
RESULTS |
SPSS graded stallion Rotherwood Signature successfully defending his 2011 Jumping Champion title ridden by Lara Whiteway |
The 2012 Potential Jumping and Eventing Championships were held as part of the 2012 IPS Auction Event and took place in glorious sunshine on Saturday 27th October at South View Competition & Training Centre, Cheshire. The classes were both open to 4, 5 and 6 year old ponies up to and including 148cms (149 cms with shoes) in height and riders could be any age. With a good number of ponies entered, both the Jumping and Eventing judges agreed that many of the ponies were top quality and had exciting futures ahead. This year, there were some excellent Irish-bred ponies and they did well but the British-bred Welsh Sec B & SPSS graded stallion Rotherwood Signature still retained his title of Champion Young Jumping Pony.

Young Eventing Pony Championships supported by British Eventing |
|||||||||||||
BE Accredited Coach, Linda de Matteo judged this competition and each pony performed a dressage test then jumped a course of jumps as follows:
The results of each class were determined on a score basis with the dressage score being added to the jumping score. The dressage score consisted of a mark for each pace and a further mark for each of attitude and balance. The jumping score was calculated by 5 points being allocated for each of the 8 fences cleared as well as marks for the ponys Technique, Athleticism and Temperament. The first and second placed ponies in each class went forward to the Championships, where Linda asked the riders to show their ponies galloping (as this is a key attribute for a successful eventer) and she took this into consideration when selecting the Champion and Reserve.
Linda commented afterwards that "it was a wonderful day with a high standard of ponies and small event horses forward this year" and "the classes were a pleasure to judge". There is more information on how the class was judged can be found here.
Information about the Champion, Reserve and other class winners follows or click here to view full class results including details of sire/dam/damsire etc. |
Champion Eventing Pony, Feagh Delamain and rider Chloe Bell receive their prizes including a SPSS Thermatex Rug from Judge, Linda De Matteo Reserve Champions Fred & Charlotte Budworth are behind. |
Young Eventing Pony Champion and Top 5 Year Old Pony
Overall Eventing Champion was the 5 year old winner, Irish-bred Feagh Delamain ridden by 14 year old Chloe Bell. Owned by Chloe's mother, Helen Bell, Delamain, known at home as "Dodger", and Chloe had the highest dressage score then did a stylish clear round to add the joint highest jumping score to it. As well as a SPSS Thermatex Rug, Chloe and Dodger were also presented with a voucher for an animal portrait by www.paintmypet.co.uk As the highest scoring Pony Club member, Chloe also won a lesson with Pony Team Trainer Jonquil Heming.
Chloe has produced Dodger from a 4 year old and they are aiming for Pony Trials in the future. In 2012, they have been competing at BE100 and were clear cross country at all 5 of their events with no more than one show jump and a few time faults to add to their dressage score.
Chloe and Dodger also competed in the Young Jumping Pony Championships where they were Reserve Champions. Dodger's Irish Horse Register passport does not record his breeder nor any information about his dam. However, it does state that his sire is the Irish Sports Horse Feagh Cavalier, a 2004 coloured show jumper by Cavalier Two for Joy. |
Young Eventing Pony Reserve Champion and Top 4 Year Old Pony
The Eventing Reserve Champion was another Irish-bred, the 4 year old winner, Fred, ridden by 14 year old Charlotte Budworth. Fred has an Irish Horse Register passport but there is no information in it about his breeding or breeder. He was purchased by his owner, Lucy Greenwood, just two months before the Championships and Lucy and Charlotte say that he has a wonderful temperament, excellent training ability and huge potential. Despite it being his first event, Fred had both the highest dressage and jumping scores of all of the 4 year olds presented.
Charlotte and Fred were presented with a Wish Bands beaded browband and a SPSS polo shirt |
Top 6 Year Old Young Eventing Pony
Fanisk Crafty (known as "Smarty") was the highest scoring 6 year old pony and was ridden by Chloe Bell in the dressage and jumping phases and by Christie Farren in the Championships. Smarty is owned by Helen Bell and is another Irish Horse Register passported pony with unknown breeding and he regularly competed at unaffiliated show jumping and was hunted in Ireland before coming to the UK.
Smarty had been schooled over BE90 and BE100 tracks before the event but has little dressage experience, so Chloe was both surprised and thrilled that he was the top scoring pony in both the dressage and jumping phases. |
Other Prizes
All class winners were presented with a Mostyn Farm Ride & Cross Country voucher and a voucher for FREE Training session with British Eventing (worth approximately £40 via www.britisheventing.com/training).
D&J Saddlery gave a £50 voucher to highest scoring registered Mountain & Moorland pony and this was won by 5 year old WPCS Sec D Siglan Ernie ridden by Phoebe Woodbine. Ernie has only been with the Woodbine family for a few weeks and had done little in the previous 12 months. Their plan is to hunt Ernie over the winter and then start eventing him in the Spring.
The Shop @ Keysoe "Goody Bag" containing shampoo, sponge, comb and hoof pick for best turned out pony & rider was won by Time for Fenella & Xanthe Goldsack. Fenella has unusual breeding for a pony born on a Welsh hill farm born as her sire is an American Saddlebred who paid a visit to the UK from his normal location of Oregan USA! 2012 was 13 year old Xanthe and Fenella's first season eventing and they have progressed to placing 10th with a double clear at BE100 level.
The SPSS Teddy due to be given to the youngest rider was replaced by a polo shirt as 12 year old Izzy Hosking had already received a teddy as she was also the youngest rider in the Jumping Championships riding Sarah Hosking's Amber Boy.
All competitors received a voucher for money off a Wish Bands browband

Champion Jumping Pony, Rotherwood Signature |
This class was judged by British Show Jumping course builder Gillian Milner and the results of the class were determined on a score basis with 4 points being allocated for each of the fences cleared and then Gillian allocated marks out of 10 for each of Style/Technique, Potential and Temperament (including attitude and ability to learn) to give an overall score.
Each pony jumped once around a course of show jumps. The maximum fence heights were:
Class 1: 4 year old ponies Fences not to exceed 85cms Class 2: 5 year old ponies - Fences not to exceed 95cms Class 3: 6 year old ponies - Fences not to exceed 1.05m

Young Jumping Pony Champion and Top 6 Year Old Pony
Overall Jumping Champion was the 6 year old, WPCS Sec B and SPSS graded stallion, Rotherwood Signature ridden by Lara Whiteway. The Jumping judge, Gillian Milner commented on that Rotherwood Signature (known as "Treacle") had a "super front and hind leg technique". As well as the SPSS Thermatex rug awarded to the Champion, as highest scoring M&M, Treacle also won a £30 voucher from Acre House Equestrian (Tel: 01978 781242), a saddle cloth from the SPSS (as he was the highest scoring SPSS registered pony) and as top 6 year old pony, a lesson from Show Jumping Trainer Ken Pritchard.
Treacle is owned by Trudy Golding and stands at her End House Stud. He was bred by Liz Mansfield-Parnell at Rotherwood Stud from the same family as "Coco Can", being by Douthwaite Signwriter (WPCS Sec B) out of Rotherwood Half a Penny (by Desabre Streetfighter (WPCS Sec B)).
Treacle was the 2011 Young Jumping Pony Champion ridden by his regular jumping rider, Maisey Sloan (then aged 8). Sadly, Maisey was unwell the day before the 2012 competition and so was unable to accompany him to the event; fortunately, Lara was able to stand in and, although Treacle is considerably smaller than the horses she normally rides, she was even showing off his flying changes!! Treacle also qualified for the Burghley Event Pony Finals in 2012, was Reserve Champion at the 2010 SPSS Stallion Grading and, in 2009, he was Reserve Champion in the Scottish Sports Horse 3 year old pony Loose Jumping competition.

Young Jumping Pony Reserve Champion and Top 5 Year Old Pony
The Reserve Champion was Helen Bell's 5 year old Feagh Delamain (known as "Dodger") ridden by her daughter, 14 year old Chloe. Judge Gillian Milner was impressed by the quality of 5 year olds forward in this class and couldn't initially split Dodger and Chloe from the youngest rider Izzy Hosking and her British Connemara, Amber Boy. So a mini jump off was held, with Chloe & Izzy jumping a single upright fence away from the collecting ring and in front of the judging box. They both jumped the fence twice and each had it down once, but Chloe & Dodger impressed Gillian just a little more and so were awarded 1st place and subsequently the Reserve Champion title, a Wish Bands beaded browband and SPSS polo shirt. As the highest scoring Pony Club member, Chloe also won a lesson with Taylor Croke.
Dodger was bred in Ireland and is by the coloured Irish Sports Horse Feagh Cavalier. Feagh Cavalier is by Ireland's top coloured stallion for producing show jumpers and eventers, the Irish Sport Horse Cavalier Two for Joy who is himself by the famous Holstein jumping sire Cavalier Royale. Feagh Cavalier's dam, the Weatherbys Non TB Register, Rookhill Lass VII is by the American TB Delamain. |
Top 4 Year Old Young Jumping Pony
Winner of the 4 year old Young Jumping Pony section, Spring Mead Autumn Breeze ridden by her owner Gemma Gale is a British-bred pure bred Haflinger who was graded Elite by the Haflinger Society of Great Britain in 2011 and then in 2012 became the first Haflinger to grade into the SPSS Head Studbook, scoring over 80%. Gemma and Autumn were also awarded the Best Turned Out prize of a "goody bag" from The Shop @ Keysoe.
|
Youngest Rider
As she was the youngest rider, 12 year old Izzy Hoskins received a SPSS Teddy. Izzy rode Sarah Hosking's British-bred Connemara, Amber Boy (known as "Alfie") and they were a very close 2nd in the 5 year old class. Alfie is by the JA jumping pony Kilmullen Fionn out of Amber Girl (by Coral Prince) and is said to live for his jumping while tolerating dressage.
Izzy has only had Alfie since June but they quickly became a team and despite only registering him with British Showjumping in September had already achieved 2 double clears at British Novice. They also qualified with their school SJ team for the 2012 80cm Schools Championships. Over the winter, they plan to do Pony Club SJ and dressage, and hope to qualify for the Dengie Championships, before starting to Event in 2013. |
