A full report and results are provided below. The SPSS is very grateful to The College for hosting these classes for us and for British Eventing for generously providing training vouchers to the section winners.
Each pony first did a dressage test then after a break to allow for clothing & tack changing, they jumped a BE equivalent single phase course of show jumps indoors then moved to the adjacent outdoor arena for a short course of portable XC jumps. This consisted of 5 fences below the maximum height followed by 5 at the maximum.
Due the low number of entrants, it was not possible to have the ponies judged separately from the other entrants, so they were judged alongside the open competitors and the results were determined on a penalty score basis as per BE rules. There were no 4 year old ponies entered but the 5 year olds did the BE92 dressage test and jumped fences up to 80cms and the 6 year olds did BE102 and their fences did not exceed 90cms.

Reserve Champion and Top 5 Year Old Pony
Renkum Bombadier and 10 year old Daisy Bathe were the only other young pony entrants to complete on their dressage score and, as well as winning the 5 year old pony section, they were Reserve Champions. Bombadier is by the Welsh Section B Wharley Grenadier out of an AES registered mare by the International GP Show Jumper Cobretti. Bred by Henk Minderman, in 2012 Bombadier was 3rd (out of 26 entrants) in the loose jumping class at the SSGB Stallion Parade. Daisy, who was awarded the SPSS Teddy prize as she was the youngest rider, is the daughter of the former International eventer, Charlotte Bathe who won Burghley in 1992, Team Gold at the World Championships in 1994 and the European Champtionships in 1995 and represented GB as an individual at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Other 5 year old Ponies
Second in this class was 12 year old Jessica Corser on the Irish-bred Connemara Breaffy Delight who is known as "Ronan". Jessica and Ronan are a relatively new partnership who have enjoyed some success show jumping and were 3rd at their first event together. They plan to compete at BE in 2014 as well as continue to compete for the Atherstone Hunt Pony Club in eventing, show jumping and dressage.
Third were Hannah Owen and Cherryhills Arctic Kiss, who had been 3rd in the 4 year old class in 2012. Known as "Cally", this young mare was bred by Hannah and her father out of Hannah's Irish jumping pony. By the now deceased SPSS Elite stallion, Laban, Cally achieved High First or First premiums each year at the BEF Futurity Young Horse Evaluations and has only been lightly competed as a 4 and 5 year old. Cally and Hannah have started hunting with the Quorn recently and will be out with them as much as possible over the winter. |
