The Overall Champion was the top 4 year old pony, the British-bred and SPSS passported gelding Cruz (pictured on left wearing his SPSS Thermatex Rug prize), ridden by Jayne Turney, owned by Charlotte Dujardin and bred by Rachel Silk.
Reserve Champion was the second placed 4 year old pony, the German bred Dumbledore D ridden by his owner, Julia Walker.
Third placed overall was the top 6 year old pony, the German bred SPSS graded stallion Classic's Charmeur, ridden by Megan Pomphret and owned by Jacke Mathieson.

The SPSS is very grateful for the support of British Dressage who kindly donated vouchers to the highest scoring pony in each age group, Wish Bands who kindly donated vouchers for money off their beaded browbands to competitors and Bury Farm who hosted the event.
We were delighted to have as chief judge, Jenny Ward who is a British Dressage List One Judge and recently retired British Dressage Pony Team Selector. Jenny is pictured on the right congratulating the Reserve Champion, Dumbledore D and his rider Julia Walker. On the right is Jacke Mathieson of Wish Bands.
Overall, the SPSS were thrilled that once again the Champion is a SPSS passported pony and that overall the standard was still high with a good number of British bred ponies despite the reduced number of entries. Commenting after, Jenny Ward said that the well trained ponies were able to perform with confidence and show their natural talent to advantage. She also said that it was nice to see the younger riders wanting to present their young ponies themselves. |

Young Dressage Pony Champion and Top 4 Year Old Pony
Overall Champion and winner of the 4 Year old Class was Cruz (Caesar 171 x Don Larino), ridden by Jayne Turney. Cruz was bred by Rachel Silk and, having been bought by Olympic Gold medal winning dressage rider, Charlotte Dujardin last November, went to her friend Jayne Turney for backing just before Christmas 2012. Jayne has brought Cruz on slowly this year and this was only his third competition and first time indoors.
Cruz's sire, SPSS Elite graded Caesar 171, also sired the 2012 Reserve Champion, LE Chiffre who has since competed internationally for GB at the age of 6. Caesar is himself a former international dressage pony, ridden by Victoria Molloy, he was a member of the GB Dressage Pony Teams that won Silver at the European Championships 2000 and Bronze in 2002. |

Reserve Champion
Reserve Champion was the second placed 4 year old, the German-bred Dumbledore D (Don Davidoff x Voyage) ridden by Julia Walker. Julia bought Dumbledore in Germany, where he'd licensed as a stallion. Now gelded, Julia's plan is to sell Dumbledore to a pony rider and then look for another young pony to back and bring on for a dressage career. Dumbledore D and Julia are pictured on the left in the lap of honour (above) and in the test.
Other 4 year old ponies
Sorrelcourt Masquarade (Glynwyn Yab-a-dab-a-doo x Cippyn Red Flyer), a striking WPCS Sec C, owned and ridden by Sarah Mitchell-Smith was the first competitor in the class and their score of 7.1 put them in 4th place over the whole class. Masquarade was bred in Yorkshire and his bloodlines include some of the names that also occur in the pedigrees of top sports ponies like Manitu N (winner of multiple dressage team medals) and Machno Carwyn (double European Jumping Champion).
The final 4 year old competitor, Wescoe Don't Worry (FS Don't Worry x Trelawn Riverdance) was home-bred by his owner/rider Sarah Bosomworth and, although this was not just "Hugo's" first show but his first ever outing, he coped well with the flowers etc and grew in confidence during the test to finish 5th overall. Hugo's dam is a Britsh Rding pony who competed up to Elementary level before having Hugo and his older sister, both of whom Sarah is bringing on as potential FEI dressage ponies.

Top 5 Year Old Pony
The top 5 Year Old Pony and winner of a voucher for 50% off British Dressage Horse Registration (kindly supplied by British Dressage) was the pure bred British Connemara mare, Kirtle Bluebell (Castle Gizmo x Tiercel Woodman). Bluebell (pictured right) was bred in Scotland by Mr & Mrs W Hodge at their small stud and her rider/owner, Sophie Palmer - who used to exercise racehorses - selected Bluebell for her size and versatility.
Just a fraction behind was the British-bred coloured stallion, Sherlock's Seren Dreamer (Griffos Seren x Rocket), who was ridden by his breeder & owner Rebecca Lock. With a WPCS Sec C sire and native blood on his dam's side, he was bred to show and was 9th at HOYS this year. However, this versatile pony will be doing more dressage and also be jumping over the winter. |

Top 6 Year Old Pony & Youngest Rider
Top 6 Year Old Pony and third overall was the SPSS graded stallion, Classic's Charmeur (Classic Dancer x Domingo), owned by Jackie Mathieson. As well as "Charm" winning prize money and a voucher for 50% off British Dressage Horse Registration (kindly supplied by British Dressage), his 12 year old rider, Megan Pomphret, was presented with a SPSS Teddy as she was the youngest rider in the class. Megan has only been riding Charm for a short while and but a promising partnership is already developing and they are working towards competing in the FEI Pony Tests.
The 2nd placed 6 year old pony, Maxentius (breeding unknown) was ridden by the only other junior rider, his owner 15 year old Charlotte Grainger. Maxentius was an unwanted foal after his TB type dam was bought at the sales and then found to be in foal (the "Buy One Get One Free" BOGOF scenario!) and so he was acquired by the Grainger family. Charlotte backed and produced Maxentius herself and they have had good results at Novice Open this year. Charlotte will be training hard over the winter with the intention of competing at FEI Pony level in her last year on ponies. |
The third placed 6 year old was another strikingly marked pony, Amilas Picasso (Sunwillow Jubilee x SHR Rode to Fame), who was ridden by Louise Davies for his breeder & owner, Salima Kaswani. Picasso's sire is the smallest active SPSS graded stallion, the WPCS Sec A Sunwillow Jubilee, and Picasso was the smallest pony in the class at just 131 cm. Picasso 's dam is a part bred Arab, Shybont Pop Idol, by SHR Rode to Fame (Saddlebred/Arab) and her dam, Daisy, was a 12hh welsh type coloured pony. Picasso is another all round pony as he also jumps and does Pony Club with borrowed riders. |
